You are responsible for the architecture of digital twin deployments — the data pipelines, the synchronisation strategies, the integration with existing OT and IT systems. This guide maps the key technical decisions and the research that should inform them.
Your Learning Path
Choose your synchronisation strategy first
Real-time synchronisation is technically demanding and expensive. Decide upfront which assets need sub-second sync (safety-critical systems), which need minute-level sync (process optimisation), and which can be batch-updated (reporting twins). The arXiv synchronisation paper provides a useful taxonomy.
Design for data heterogeneity from day one
Industrial environments have sensors from dozens of vendors, running dozens of protocols. Your architecture must abstract over this heterogeneity. OPC-UA is the closest thing to a standard, but you will still need adapters for legacy MODBUS, PROFIBUS, and proprietary protocols.
Understand the NVIDIA/Dassault 'Industry World Models' direction
The shift from asset-level twins to environment-level world models is the most significant architectural change on the horizon. Read the Engineering.com article on NVIDIA and Dassault to understand where the industry is heading and how to future-proof your current architecture.
Plan your model-driven control integration
The arXiv paper on digital twin model-driven control shows how a well-synchronised twin can close the loop — feeding back into the control system rather than just monitoring it. This is the highest-value use case but requires the tightest integration.
Establish a data governance framework before scaling
As twin deployments scale from one asset to a fleet, data ownership, access control, and versioning become critical. Define who owns each data stream, how model versions are managed, and how conflicts between the physical and virtual state are resolved.
